    crisis is an abused word. When the word is adjacent to “environmental,” “existential,” often rears its many hydra’d head. Perhaps Jehovah’s Witnesses are right to say all that is left to do is witness The Rapture.

    Even If it is too late, we still need to frame a good face (like Rick Grimes) for our children.

    How can we redesign our schools to empower residents to silence the cacophony of carbon footprints stomping us all into oblivion?

    The following probe questions are conditioned by the time (second Thursday of the month, 7PM),
    and the reference text: Antonio Gramsci’s “The Organisation of Education and Culture.”

    • Our group’s name is, “Climate and Sustainability Study Group: Climate Change and Education“.
      How does, what we are doing right now, connect to the text?
    • “Organic” flows through the text. What are Gramsci’s connotations about the word?
    • Freire’s “banking concept of education” is well disbursed.
      How is Gramsci’s conception of the “unitary school” dis/similar?
    • In the second paragraph, Gramsci states that “general culture” schools are, “doomed.”
      What does the text mean to you?
    • Gramsci posits that formal-legal rulers are becoming anachronisms (page 5). Dis/agree?
    • In the “final phase,” (page 8), Gramsci states that as the “unitary school” completes its journey with a child to adolescent, it must be, “creative,” and “active.” What do these words mean to you?

    We agreed last meeting that Sustainability classes can’t be plugins or addons, their objectives must permeate all classes within the school. Gramsci states that schools should have a “twenty-four hour collective life.” (page 7) If there is a crisis in sustainability education, what values, and how, need to be injected into our sick corporeal body?

    I know you in the room won’t learn any slick WordPress tips from me: my LMS design techniques are quite primitive. Trial-and-error tacks, sink-or-swim manifests, dry-docking a few times a year to patch only the most gaping of hull holes – that’s all I got. What you might find interesting is my rather unique WordPress perspective. As an educator, each of the brown bars above rattles the deepest reaches of my brain. I look at the first brown sliver May 2020. Whenever I look at it, I feel pride. A sliver, yes, but I launched my educraft before anyone else I could see from my spyglass. Where I work, we didn’t even have a Zoom account until August. From that slivered launch, I measured my bars, perused the logs.

    Thanks to JetPack! Yes, it costs money, Line … I guarantee that JetPack will reduce cortisol levels for any educator: no matter how badly you blow up your website, JetPack will take you back 24 hours with just a few clicks. I did it many times 2020.

    So I had Jetpack installed, 5/20, and didn’t think much about it (except the many times I blew up the ubercrawl) until about the end of the year. Exhausted every night, I’d crack a few beers and simply stare at the bars. And, from a day/week/month perspective, I could reflect upon my Protean efforts, congratulating myself for a job well done today, the incredible perserverance I maintained through the week, unbelieving what I did, month, after month, after month. It became a pleasurable ritual retreating to my captain’s cabin, crack one open, stare at the stats, wondering why, what worked, what didn’t.

    But simply stating what happened when is not what I think most of you in the room will find valuable. Again, it’s about perspective. Why was I ready to launch the ubercrawl 5/20? Because the ubercrawl arose in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in the late 1990s, referenced by the Betinho Project in 2000, sailed the webquests, the wikis, the blogspots. It aligned itself with the WordPress community, 2011, and for many years served my classes as an adjunct professor at Boricua College.

    All of that happened before The Pause.


  • What is Trades Math?

    How many paint cans?
    • If you’re 2 stupid 4 college,
      2 graduate HS, take “shop math.”
    • Hammer some nails,
      chop some wood.
    • Orange vests don’t no math.

    We workers use our brains in ways not naively perceived. A fully orange vested member of a NYC local owns many things:

    • a living wage to raise a family,
    • all the bennies
      • pension
      • health/life insurance
      • annuities
      • a functional local union
      • a free lifetime education
      • but most importantly,

    Respect

    Most locals require you to pass a math test. To make the powers that be happy, si, but also because trades math is in situation — you need to think on your feet, not fingers, applying math techniques that most people at best forgot about years ago — skills justifying a journeyperson’s six figure salary.

    My objective for you, if you choose to accept it, is to offer my skills to help all of you become journeypersons.
